For Sandhya Rani Nayak, fashion has become a way to take her creative identity beyond borders.
The founder of Fashion Sandy by Sandhya joined the Fashion Represents and Paris Runway Official showcase at Dartmouth House in Mayfair on September 18, presenting as part of a sold-out London Fashion Week event attended by editors and fashion media from across Europe, including representatives from Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE, Grazia and Glamour. Paris Runway Official had previously selected Fashion Sandy as one of five independent designers to highlight during London Fashion Week.
From India to an International Runway
Sandhya’s journey has already taken Fashion Sandy beyond India. The designer has previously presented her work internationally, including at a fashion festival in Dubai, while her work as the founder of Fashion Sandy has also been recognized at an international awards event in London.
Her arrival in London during one of fashion’s most closely watched weeks marked another step in that journey.
At Dartmouth House, Fashion Sandy joined designers from different countries, cultures and creative disciplines, reflecting the increasingly international character of London’s independent fashion scene.
One design, worn by Sangeetha Menon on the runway, was hand-painted by Sandy and her team. Sandy brought sustainable couture to the runway, but the designs didn’t reveal that. They were perfectly constructed, and the colors were stunning.
Building a Name Beyond Borders
For an independent designer, however, a runway is only part of the story.
Each presentation creates another opportunity for the clothes to be photographed, for the designer’s name to reach editors and for a brand built away from fashion’s traditional powerhouses to enter a larger conversation.
That was particularly significant on September 18.
A sold-out audience in Mayfair gave Fashion Sandy a platform not simply to present clothing, but to introduce the creative identity behind the label to a new international audience.
And in many ways, that is what emerging fashion should be about.
Fashion Sandy’s London Fashion Week moment wasn’t about following an established path. It was about giving an independent designer another stage on which to create her own.
