On February 11 at 6:00 PM ET, inside The Refectory at Chelsea Square in Manhattan, New York Fashion Week did something rare. It slowed down. Not to escape reality, but to confront it.
Break Free NYFW returned as the only charity runway show officially listed on the Council of Fashion Designers of America calendar. Produced by the Break Free Foundation, the annual benefit show has become one of the most meaningful moments of the season. It is a runway where fashion meets lived experience, and where creativity becomes a language for recovery, resilience, and transformation.
Founder and CEO Alexandra “Lex” Nyman describes the platform as a redefinition of what Fashion Week can represent. Instead of chasing perfection, Break Free centers stories of addiction, mental illness, eating disorders, grief, and rebirth. These are realities that have long existed within the industry, yet are rarely addressed with care or honesty.
A Runway Rooted in Purpose
Break Free NYFW is not a traditional presentation. It is a movement built around designers whose work is shaped by personal truth and emotional depth.
This season’s lineup included:
- Aldo Segama, Aldo’s House of Formals – Presenting handcrafted menswear grounded in narrative and formality. His showcase of “many ways of wearing black” highlighted tailoring as both structure and statement.
- Dmarxx Design – Founded by Devin Markiewicz, the Brooklyn-born leather accessories label introduced the signature “Blackout Bag,” honoring the founder’s journey through addiction recovery.
- LadyCat by Lex – The size-inclusive womenswear label from Alexandra Nyman, known for collections like Therapy, Shadows, and Half Mourning, translates grief and resilience into wearable art.
- Monday Blues, Studio. – An anonymous designer who allows craftsmanship to eclipse identity, earlier presenting at Men’s Day at Mercedes-Benz of Manhattan before arriving at Break Free.
- Open Mind Apparel – Founded by Aaron Thompson, featuring one-of-one designs rooted in diversity and individuality.
- REHAB New York – Claire Comai’s ready-to-wear label built around recovery, rebirth, and spiritual transformation.
- Susie Elliott – At 95 years old, the oldest designer to debut at New York Fashion Week, a living reminder that creativity has no expiration date.
Together, the designers created a collective narrative. Fashion was positioned as survival, memory, and evolution.
REHAB New York: Rebirth on the Runway
Among the most anticipated presentations was REHAB New York and its latest collection, The Renaissance.
Founded by Claire Comai, the brand draws from New York City’s architecture, nightlife, and raw creative energy. The collection explored life, death, and spiritual awakening, rooted in Comai’s personal journey through addiction recovery.
Ostrich feather, silk, leather, and tulle anchored the runway. References to Renaissance and Impressionist art, religious iconography, and the human form created a dialogue between suffering and transcendence. It was both theatrical and intimate.
“Fashion became the way I learned how to live again,” Comai shared, underscoring how deeply personal the collection was.
REHAB New York continues to offer custom pieces and collaborates with select pop ups throughout the year, reinforcing that storytelling does not end when the runway lights fade.
Artistry Beyond Fashion
Break Free unfolded as a multidisciplinary experience. Performances by Yannie Beliziano and Wyn Starks infused the evening with music rooted in vulnerability and emotional honesty. Ballerina Nisa Tatum and pianist Amilyah Robinson extended the narrative into movement and sound.
Hair and makeup were provided by Paul Mitchell School of Staten Island under Key MUA Diana Varvaro. Custom nails by Sumika Nakamura added layer of detail. Mocktails curated by Michael Toscano of Pathfinder, alongside partners including Seraphim, Clean Cause, Salud, and Dirty Virgin, created a wellness-centered atmosphere.
Notably, the New York State Office of Mental Health was present, offering educational resources directly within the Fashion Week environment. Advocacy was not symbolic. It was active.
Faces That Defined the Night
Models played a critical role in bringing emotion to the garments. Olivia Gear and Anya Marcon delivered poised, confident runway moments for both LadyCat by Lex and REHAB New York. Kelly Arjen, Naomi Parisette, and Riona brought individuality and depth.
On the menswear side, Brian Metcalf opened in Monday Blues before walking for Aldo’s House of Formals, joined by Gunpreetz Singh, Jimmy Tan, Alexander Wang, and Miguel Contreras. Their presence reinforced the show’s message that authenticity and vulnerability are strengths, not weaknesses.
VIP guests, including Evita Scoccia, founder of New York Swim Week, editors, creatives, and global media teams attended in support, recognizing that this was more than another date on the calendar.
A Statement, Not a Spectacle
As New York Fashion Week continues to evolve, Break Free stands apart. It is not built on illusion. It is built on truth.
The garments reflect the darkest and brightest chapters of their creators. The runway becomes a space where healing is visible and stories are honored. Creativity is not just worn. It is lived.
Break Free NYFW proves that fashion can serve as advocacy, therapy, and testimony all at once. In an industry long defined by image, this show reintroduces something essential: humanity.
